Bizarre, Weird And Strange Packaging

Competition is tough and package designers are struggling over how to differentiate there products from the others. Some times in the creative wars it might get a little far afield.

I’ll be the first to admit that I am a sucker for great packaging design. Package design is one of the ways to capture the consumer’s interest. But designers can also lose their perspective when trying to create something new, different or unique. It’s definitely and uphill battle.

There are many niche markets out there so perhaps these examples are specific to them.

In any case I find them bizarre and weird packaging.

This tops my list of bizarre. But what makes it even stranger as it’s sold out at a hefty price tag too

A £500 a bottle super-strong ale is to be sold inside the bodies of dead animals.

Kind of clever but also strange. I guess it appeals to the younger generation.

I know who this appeals to but how big is this market?

What’s in a name? Clearly this is a marketing gimmick. Would you want people knowing you wear Konvict cologne? I guess in some circles its considered cool.

This is a little too “cutsie” for my taste. It might make a fun gift but its still strange.

This package fascinates me. A two-headed bottle. What’s the point?

Even better how does it stand up?

This is too weird “beer pouches” and a little suggestive too. I guess that’s akin to the wine bra.

Last but not least this lascivious packaging is intriguing but it’s supposed to be candy for goodness sakes.

Got some strange packaging you want to share? Drop me a line, I’m always interested in learning how bizarre, strange or weird packaging can help you build your brand and how to capitalize on creativity.

Packaging Lessons Learned From Nature

by JoAnn Hines Packaging Diva

I’ve seen quite a few recent posts touting the use of nature’s own package design in products such as coconuts and bananas. I love fresh coconut. How about you?

via Inhabitat.com

And yes, this is  an example of natures perfect package (that is in nature). It even ships well without much additional protection. In fact you can even label and mail a coconut (true).

But have you ever tried to get into a coconut? It’s akin to opening a plastic clamshell and certainly will generate its own amount of “wrap rage” natural that is. I’ve also seen it wrapped to protect freshness. So while in theory its sounds good one must look at the bigger picture and how you can incorporate natures design in to your own.

I love this example mimicking the coconut package itself with coconut water inside.

But joking aside. A banana but itself has it’s perfect package too, but how does it get to you undamaged and ready to consume? In a package of course. Most people don’t see this part of the process unless you happen to see bananas being stocked at the store from a box or on a truck such as this one.

Transfer of boxes from refrigerated truck
The point is that even though the banana is perfect what makes it accessible to you and me is more packaging.   Can natures perfect packaging be improved? These people think so by extending it’s shelf life through some type of modified atmosphere packaging.  Bananas typically become overripe very quickly and then are no good to anyone.  Keeping them at a perfect stage of ripeness is good business.

Providing healthy and safe foods to consumers is what you have come to expect. Packaging is what makes it happen and although consumers want to see less packaging they sure don’t want to pay higher prices due to food waste. It’s a fine line between too much (excess) and too little packaging. One that continuously is improved and monitored with new and improved packaging.

Without packaging products like this couldn’t exist.

I love this nature inspired packaging.

Naoto Fukasawa has created a series of creative banana juice packages with the look and feel of the fruit they contain.

So take a lesson from nature and use its very best concepts and make them work for you. Whether it’s biomimicry or just great package design what packaging lessons can you learn?   How about your comments on these insights? Please let me know what you think and how we can turn packaging problems into packaging success. At the very least show me that you care about packaging by “liking” this post please.

Packaging Hot Buttons and Tips W/O 7/19 Impacting Your Business

Packaging Tips:

  • External influences outside your control can dramatically impact your packaging.  Watch regulatory agencies closely.  Even agencies that you might have nothing to do with can be regulating how and what you do your with your product packaging.
  • Don’t believe everything you read about product packaging.  Some of its bad some good but There Are Two Sides To Every Packaging Story as you will find out
  • Packaging can be bad or packaging can be good depending upon a point of view.  An educated consumer is the best defense . But people still criticize packaging they no nothing about.  Good examples of this are in Dumb Packaging Critics
  • For every package there is someone who will buy it. The question is how many peeps will it be?  Just remember Who Are You Packaging Your Product For
  • Some weird, bizarre or very strange packaging can get as much mileage as a great packaging design. The important thing is to recognize that When Packaging Is In The News Capitalize On It

Packaging Hot Buttons:

  • Better read this about definition of “reuse” as a sustainable packaging goal @ http://is.gd/dC6pL.
I find this definition very troublesome. It removes (in theory) a whole category of “reusable” packaging and eliminates the opportunity for Repurposed Packaging
  • Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 facilities making, packaging or distributing cosmetics must register .
Yikes, this is scary, more and more regulation just like I predicted in Big Brother Is Watching
  • 6 Least Green Types of Packaging @ http://is.gd/dznjx.
Some of these listed are very debatable in fact simply not true. Despite what you read Is It Truly Green Or Just Green Packaging Noise
  • Roadkill gets second life as beer packaging @ http://bit.ly/9btcgv.
A package that will give you nightmares (LOL) but the strangest thing it’s already sold out despite the outrageous price and bizarre packaging. Remember you can package anything

Innovative Packaging Shaping Our Lives W/O 7/12

Eco-Friendly Packaging Replaces PVC With Cardboard. Bye – bye clamshell. Replacing it with more eco-friendly corrugated to which the product is attached.

via PSFK

Luxury packaging at its best!

The Veuve Clicquot gift box, dubbed Veuve Clicquot Fridge promises to keep the Brut Yellow Label fresh for up to 2 hours.  Not sure how practical but looks good anyway.

via TreeHugger

Doubles as a charger after its use as a shipping container is over.

But since it needs to arrive as a functioning electric it’s just a concept at this time. But the idea is good like this lamp called Flamp a corrugated box than comes with a light bulb and hardware inside. You just plug it in and you are good to go.

Do you have a packaging innovation that can shape peoples lives? Be sure and share it.here.
